BBC iPlayer for Children
The BBC have just announced that today they are launching a new version of their award-winning iPlayer. Accessible from the CBBC website, the new service allows 6-12 year olds to access their favourite programs in a child-friendly manner. This means that inappropriate content not be available and provides direct links to relevant content on the CBBC website.
This is a fantastic and forward-looking addition to the CBBC website. A second phase in the first half of 2009 will see a similar site for CBeebies (which my son will love!) Both channels are currently streamed live through the iPlayer.
Parents should be careful not to become too complacent. The BBC website is almost too well designed, and it is very easy for young surfers to get to other parts of the BBC site. But combined with some web-filtering software, this will make online viewing much safer for children.
